Every year on August 20th, Budapest comes alive with a vibrant celebration of Hungary’s national holiday. The city is filled with music, tradition, and joy — from cultural festivals and family-friendly programs to solemn ceremonies and the dazzling fireworks that light up the night sky over the Danube.
At Silverline Cruises, we’re excited to be part of this festive occasion. But first things first…
What do we celebrate on the 20th of August?

On August 20, we celebrate the foundation of the Hungarian state, as King Stephen I (Saint Stephen) established the Christian Hungarian state with his coronation in the year 1000. On this day, we also celebrate the canonization of Saint Stephen, which has been commemorated since 1083. This is because King Ladislaus canonized King Stephen on this day, thereby declaring August 20 a holy day.
We also celebrate the end of the harvest at this time, which is why traditionally a loaf of bread made from the new wheat is baked and blessed for this day. The loaf is tied with a ribbon, then the freshly baked bread is blessed, sliced, and finally the pieces are distributed. It is customary to say a prayer of thanksgiving in churches at this time for the completion of the harvest. The bread symbolizes that life and the homeland are connected. The blessed bread still remains part of the festive table in many places to this day.
In the past, it was customary to make harvest-wreaths from wheat ears and wildflowers or to craft wheat dolls, which were then carried before the landowner by the harvesters during the festive procession. Since 1927, the spectacular fireworks display has also been part of nationwide celebrations, attracting many spectators.
