St. Stephen’s Day hold a special place in the hearts of Hungarians. This event is probably the most joyful celebration of the year. On the 20th of August we celebrate the nation founding and our first king St. Stephen. On this day the whole of Hungary organizes programmes and festivals, here is a list of a few held in Budapest:

Once again, the most visited and highly anticipated gastronomic event, the Street of Hungarian Flavors will be held where you can taste some of the traditional dishes of Hungary. During the festival the Hungarian Cake of the Year, the St. Stephen’s Day bread will also be presented. The Festival of Crafts will also take place in Buda Castle between the 18th and 20th of August this year.

At Kossuth Square, the St. Stephen’s Day ceremonial celebration, Flag hoisting, and Pledge of Allegiance await the visitors.

In the City Park (Városliget), there will be numerous programs to be seen. We recommend the program called “Magic Park” for children, where kids’ activities, fairy tale exhibitions, prince and princess training workshops, a giant circus, and many surprises await the little ones.

Also, during this weekend, the largest free Street Music Festival will take place, accompanied by the Food Truck Show for the pleasure of partygoers.

On the Pest and Buda embankments, the Hungarian Defense Forces Air Parade will showcase the special display of military aircraft, helicopters, and the parachutist team over the Danube. In the St. Stephen’s Basilica, there will be a Festive Holy Mass and a procession with the Holy Right Hand, welcoming the interested public.

The culmination of the festive atmosphere will be Europe’s largest fireworks display, featuring beautiful fireworks, spectacular light shows, and the illumination of the Parliament, Gellért Hill, and the National Gallery building, inviting the audience to the nation’s celebration.
In addition, we also would like to invite you to enjoy the best seats in the house for the fireworks!
