There is a new kind of street food in town! – Eat at Nokedlish
Photo: Nokedi’s official Facebook page
Getting fed up with the heavy greasy winter dishes yet it’s still too early to enjoy light salads and veggies? Steetfoods of Budapest, make room for the newcomer: Nokedli.
The recently opened Nokedlish street food restaurant, located in the heart of the city, offers a unique gastronomic experience for visitors. Combining traditional Hungarian flavors with a modern street food twist, Nokedlish serves up creative and delicious dishes in a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere.
Situated in a cozy space on Vas Street, the restaurant focuses on affordable, hearty, and flavorful Hungarian street food, with one star ingredient at its core—nokedli (Hungarian dumplings). While typically served as a side dish in Hungarian cuisine—most commonly alongside chicken or mushroom paprikash—nokedli takes center stage at Nokedlish, reimagined as a standalone street food dish. The mastermind behind this bold and innovative concept is Ádám Gottreich-Horváth, who has transformed nokedli into a street food sensation.
The concept is simple yet brilliant: a base of classic or gluten-free nokedli, topped with a variety of flavorful sauces and toppings.
Options include mushrooms, spinach, jalapeños, sous-vide chicken, or beef, with extras like spicy “betyár salsa” and different flavored sour creams for an added kick. Seasonal specials also make an appearance—such as the beloved egg nokedli with lettuce in spring—or even a fun, American-inspired twist: “Noc ‘n’ Cheese”.
But what is Nokedli? Allow us to introduce this essential piece of the Hungarian cuisine in a few sentences:
Nokedli, the Hungarian version of small, soft dumplings, is a beloved staple in the country’s cuisine. This simple yet satisfying pasta is often compared to German Spätzle, but it has its own unique texture and preparation. Made from just flour, eggs, water, and a pinch of salt, the dough is soft and sticky, requiring a special nokedli maker or a spoon to drop small pieces into boiling water. Once cooked, the dumplings are light, chewy, and the perfect accompaniment to many traditional Hungarian dishes.
