Behold the LEGO tram in the heart of Budapest

Photo: bbk.hu

LEGO has brought the joy of play to the heart of Hungary’s capital city. In collaboration with municipal transportation companies, BKK and BKV, and Budapest Brand, the toy manufacturer envisioned a one-of-a-kind vehicle: a life-sized LEGO tram made entirely of more than 1,8 million colorful bricks. Although passengers can’t ride this tram, its cheerful appearance offers an extraordinary visual treat for visitors to Deák Ferenc Square, where it will remain on display throughout the Advent season. This tram is especially remarkable because no moving structure of this scale has ever been built using LEGO bricks alone. Unlike previous life-sized LEGO vehicles, which used flexible LEGO Technic components, this tram was constructed entirely with classic LEGO bricks. As Balázs Dóczy—a renowned LEGO artist responsible for life-sized replicas such as the Chain Bridge lions, (which we also introduced earlier) and models of Heroes’ Square, St. Stephen’s Basilica, and the Liszt Academy—explained, this project pushed creative boundaries.

The LEGO tram’s unveiling is also timely, as it coincides with the celebration of Budapest’s tram system’s anniversary. The city’s first tram debuted on November 28, 1887, marking 137 years of tram transportation in the city. Dubbed “LEGO Vili,” the installation symbolizes this rich history while inspiring joy and wonder among visitors.
